About the course
The South Course is Quinta do Lago’s established 18-hole, par-72 championship layout, designed by William Mitchell and opened in 1974. It runs through umbrella pines, lakes and wildflower areas beside the Ria Formosa Natural Park, with elevated tees and carefully placed bunkers asking players to select lines rather than simply chase distance. The course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times, including Colin Montgomerie’s 1989 victory, which gives it the clearest tournament pedigree of Quinta do Lago’s three courses. A major renovation beginning in 2020 renewed playing surfaces and infrastructure with an emphasis on environmental performance. Compared with the fully redesigned North Course and the orchard character of Laranjal, South combines the resort’s longest history with a recognised championship test. Practice and academy facilities are available within the resort, while golf access and membership remain independent of residential ownership.
