Dave Thomas golf with Gibraltar views

The Marbella Club Hotel is proud to present its 18 Hole Golf Course, designed by Dave Thomas. Situated only a 20 minute drive from the Hotel, amidst the hills of Benahavis, this magnificent Marbella golf course in the heart of the Costa del Sol enjoys spectacular views of Gibraltar, the African Coastline, the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains. With a total length of 6,247m, the golf course is enhanced by carefully contoured fairways, beautiful waterfalls, lakes and strategically placed bunkers, as well as undulating and protected greens, maintained to perfection.

La Zagaleta Golf Club 18 holesPar 72Parkland

Private parkland golf above the Alboran Sea

With 36 Parkland holes, the Old and the New course in La Zagaleta settle in an astonishing background of Mediterranean forests with breathtaking views of the Alborán Sea, Africa and Gibraltar. Both courses offer a dynamic design of doglegs, going either left or right, where hitting the fairways off the tee becomes vital in order to attack small but undulated greens from mid to short range. They are not long courses but they are very technical where a risk/reward strategy is present in many of its holes. The peace, tranquility and silence is only broken occasionally by the sighting of a pheasant, a deer, buck or mouflon, permanent residents in La Zagaleta.

Monte Mayor Golf Club 18 holesMountain

Former mountain course in the Benahavis hills

Monte Mayor Golf Club was an 18-hole mountain course in a high valley above Benahavís, designed by José Gancedo and opened in 1989. Its routing crossed ravines, gullies and steep changes of level, using bridges and elevated tees to connect isolated playing corridors. That dramatic terrain made it a demanding target-golf course rather than a conventional coastal parkland layout; safe positioning and confidence over carries were central to the experience. However, the course closed for financial reasons and should not be presented to property buyers as an operating golf facility. Historical sources also disagree on its final par, variously listing 70, 71 and 72. The site remains relevant to the identity of the Monte Mayor residential area, but buyers should assess it as former golf infrastructure unless a verified reopening is formally announced.

Los Arqueros Golf 18 holesPar 71Links

Seve Ballesteros design in the Benahavis hills

Los Arqueros is an 18-hole, par-71 course in the steep hills of Benahavís, designed by Seve Ballesteros and opened in 1991. At roughly 5,700 metres it is not long, yet narrow landing areas, pronounced elevation changes, ravines and well-placed bunkers make accuracy and conservative club selection important. The routing works with the mountain terrain rather than flattening it, producing changing levels and long views towards the Mediterranean. This creates a more exacting target-golf experience than the broader parkland courses closer to the coast. The club includes a golf academy, practice facilities, pro shop and clubhouse services. For an international property buyer, Los Arqueros’ defining characteristic is the close relationship between the course and its hillside residential setting, but owning within that setting does not itself establish membership or playing rights.

La Quinta Golf & Country Club 27 holesChampionship parkland

27 holes across three Benahavis loops

La Quinta Golf & Country Club provides 27 holes in the hills of Benahavís, between Marbella’s Golf Valley and the mountains. Manuel Piñero designed three nine-hole loops — San Pedro, Ronda and Guadaiza — which can be combined into different 18-hole rounds. Rolling fairways, elevated positions, doglegs and water hazards vary the strategic demands, while views extend towards the Mediterranean and surrounding ridges. The three-loop format is its practical advantage over single-course neighbours: regular players can change the sequence and character of a round without leaving the club. La Quinta has also hosted Ladies European Tour competition, including the Spanish Women’s Open. Current booking, membership and facility information should be confirmed directly with the Spanish club or resort, as these arrangements can change and are independent of nearby property ownership.

Atalaya Golf & Country Club 36 holesTwo-course parkland complex

Two contrasting parkland courses near Benahavis

Atalaya Golf & Country Club is a 36-hole complex between Marbella and Estepona. Its Old Course opened in 1968 to a design by Bernhard von Limburger and is an established par-72 parkland layout with broad, tree-lined fairways and elevated greens. The shorter, hillier New Course followed in 1990, designed by Paul Krings; its undulating ground and tighter decisions give it a distinctly different rhythm. Both courses occupy relatively natural surroundings, with less housing immediately crowding the playing corridors than at many later residential layouts. The club also hosts the PG Golf & Sports Academy and substantial practice facilities. For an international buyer, Atalaya’s distinction is choice: two full courses of contrasting age and character rather than a single resort round. Access and playing arrangements remain club matters and are not implied by nearby property ownership.

El Higueral Golf 9 holesPar 36Heathland

Picturesque nine-hole golf in Benahavis

El Higueral is a full-length nine-hole, par-36 course on the lower slopes near Benahavís. Rather than functioning as a short par-three facility, it provides a conventional mix of holes that can be played as a compact round. The routing follows gently rising foothill ground, with lakes, shaped greens and changing vistas supplying much of the strategy. Water is a recurring consideration, so position and distance control matter even though the course is shorter to complete than its 18-hole neighbours. Its scale and informal format make it useful for regular practice, a quicker game or players building confidence before tackling the area’s longer mountain layouts. For buyers, the key distinction is convenience and nine-hole flexibility, not resort-championship status. Access and repeat-play arrangements remain matters for the operator rather than consequences of owning locally.
