About the course

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is regarded as one of Robert Trent Jones's masterpieces, named by the architect himself as one of his five favourites among the 500-plus courses he designed worldwide. Opened in 1964 as his first course in Europe, it embodies his design philosophy: a layout integrated naturally into its surroundings that challenges the best players while remaining enjoyable for all. Its standing is reflected in a roll of winners that includes Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazábal, Sergio García, Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy. Set just 150 metres from the Mediterranean, the par 72, 6,492-metre course offers long tees, wide fairways and elevated, subtly contoured greens that hold most of its difficulty. Of around a hundred bunkers, 69 sit around the greens, demanding real precision on approach. Variety defines the round, not only in the shape and length of the holes but in the vegetation too, with cork oaks, pines and palms framing the course throughout.
